3. Information on Recycling
From 1st January 2008 NO commercial hardcore will be accepted at Bruslee Recycling Centre. Householders resident in the Borough may continue to dispose of hardcore at Bruslee (free of charge) on issue of a disposal token, on completion of the necessary application form. Further details...
Bruslee Recycling and Civic Amenity Site offers all residents of the Borough the opportunity to recycle a wide range of materials detailed below:
What CAN be recycled:
What CAN NOT be recycled:
- Tyres
- Commercial hardcore
It is our intention to divert as many waste streams from land filling to recycling. Would you please help us by segregating your various wastes before coming to the site? This will speed up your turn around at the time of your visit.
Please Note: some items cannot be recycled at Bruslee Recycling and Civic Amenity Site. Used tyres are no longer accepted at Bruslee Recycling and Civic Amenity Site. This measure has been taken as a result of recommendation from both the EU and the Department of the Environment with regards to the disposal of whole tyres in Landfill sites. Other options for disposal of tyres include:
- Retreading - car tyres can be retreaded once, truck tyres up to three times
- Paying for disposal when purchasing new tyres. This service should be offered by most tyre dealers, but a cost will be incurred.
4. Services for Commercial Businesses
Newtownabbey Borough Council aims to provide Newtownabbey Business Users a best value service. Unlike some other Councils in Northern Ireland, we charge by weight rather than volume. Click here (.doc 34Kb) for waste comparisons with other Northern Ireland Councils for 2006/07. Click here to visit our Bruslee Business page.
5. Services for Domestic Residents
Only commercial businesses pay to use Bruslee - for all residents it is free.
If you intend to bring waste to Bruslee we strongly encourage you to segregate materials at home before you leave for the site. This is to ensure that materials can quickly be placed into the correct container thus helping us to raise our recycling levels and making your visit as quick as possible.
As you can see from the chart, below the majority of waste received at Bruslee is general waste. Currently approximately 34% was recycled in 2008/2009. By segregating wastes you can help us to reduce levels of general waste sent to local landfill sites and increase recycling rates.

11. Bruslee User Group
At Bruslee Recycling and Civic Amenity Site we endeavor to provide an excellent service for all users of the site. While a full range of recycling and waste disposal services are available on site we are continually striving to improve the service we offer to our customers.
In order to gauge opinions on potential future developments to the site and to enable users of Bruslee to provide feedback to site management, a Bruslee User Group has been established. The group meets once or twice a year to discuss the sites development.
The most recent User Group met in October 2006. For a copy of the agenda click here. It provided the opportunity for the Waste Management Manager to tell the group about past and proposed developments to the site as well as waste streams. In turn, the User Group was able to ask questions on these and matters affecting the site.
One issue the group commented on was having to queue on the main road before it opens at 8:30am. In response to this, the bottom gate is now open at 8am to let users queue on the site, before the site facilities open at 8:30am.
A date for the next Bruslee User Group is to be confirmed but details will be published in both Source and the Council website. Past group attendees will also be contacted by post or email. If you are a business or domestic user and would be interested in attending, please contact the Recycling Manager, Lisa Mayne on 028 9034 0077 or email lmayne@newtownabbey.gov.uk
