Brown Bin Collections

Same Day Bin Collections

Newtownabbey Borough Council operates a Same Day collection service. This means that both Black and Brown bins will be collected on the same day, once a fortnight. Please refer to your calendar for your collection dates. If you require another copy of your calendar you can download it by clicking onto the online bin checker above or email cleansing@newtownabbey.gov.uk with your full postal address.

Food Waste Liners/Red Tags

Every household in the borough should have received a reusable red tag to request more food waste liners. When you need more liners please attach this to the handle of your brown bin on your next collection day and the crew will leave you more bags. Please remember to remove the tag and reuse it again when you need more liners. If you have not received a red tag email cleansing@newtownabbey.gov.uk

Liners can be collected from the following Council sites: The Valley Leisure Centre, Ballyearl Arts & Leisure Centre, Sixmile Leisure Centre, Ballyclare Town Hall and Mossley Mill.

Brown Bin Update

We work with Avenue Recycling to deliver your brown bin collection service. You shouldn’t notice any difference to the service and collection days will remain the same. However your bin may be collected at a different time during the day.

We are very excited about this partnership and it will give us an opportunity to increase participation in the scheme and also encourage residents to use the scheme not only for garden waste but also for food waste.

The contract with Avenue Recycling is based on the number of bins collected. The majority of brown bins in the borough have chips and the remainder will be chipped over the coming weeks.

Remember you can use your brown bin for garden waste but also for food waste- including meat and fish, dairy products, fruit and vegetables, bread and cake, rice, pasta, beans, uneaten food and tea and coffee grounds.

If you need a food waste caddy please call 90340056/57 and if you require food waste liners- they can be collected from any of the Council Leisure Centres, Mossley Mill, at Bruslee Recycling Centre or attach your red tag onto the handle of your brown bin and the crew will leave a roll of liners.”

My Black or Brown Bin Hasn't Been Collected - What Should I Do?

We aim to collect 99% of all bins on their due day. However, sometimes for various reasons we may miss some (eg. parked cars, roadworks etc. may obstruct safe access to your street). Check the list below for some reasons why your bin may not have been collected:

  1. Did you leave your bin out before 7am on it's correct collection day?
  2. During holidays, bin collection days may change - is there a change to your collection day?
  3. Was your bin's lid closed and no other side waste left outside your bin?

If this doen't explain why your bin was not collected then as long as you let us know within 24hrs we can arrange for it to be collected. If you tell us later than this then it will not be possible to schedule a bin lorry to collect your waste.

To report your bin collection as being missed simply call us on 9034 0056/57 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm) or email us cleansing@newtownabbey.gov.uk and let us know your bin was missed, we can check your address and arrange a collection.
