Volunteer Walk Leader Training
The Walking the Way to Health Initiative (WHI) has helped to create over 350 local health walk schemes and has trained more than 18,000 volunteer walk leaders. Since 2000, it is estimated that WHI has encouraged over a million people to walk more.
In Newtownabbey, Volunteer Walk Leader training is delivered FREE through the Northern Partnership for Physical Activity and is recognised by the British Heart Foundation National Centre for Physical Activity. The walk leader training is a one day course covering the following areas:
- Introduction to health
- What physical activity is important – walking for health
- Components of a health walk – warm up, main walk, cool down
- Route planning
- Registration
- Walk Leader responsibilities
- How to promote your walks
