As his year as Mayor of Newtownabbey draws to an end, Alderman Nigel Hamilton held a reception this week to present his charities with cheques from his fundraising activities throughout the year. His three charities were the NI Children’s Hospice, The Haemophilia Society and Thornfield House School.

Each year the Mayor of Newtownabbey embarks on a year long drive to raise significant amounts of money for chosen charities, with the golf day acting as the main fundraising event. This year’s golf day was sponsored by construction company, Graham, who also attended the reception. The company is working in partnership with Newtownabbey Borough Council on the new development project at Mossley Mill.

On handing over the cheques the Mayor said:

“It is my pleasure to present my chosen charities with this money. Each charity is very close to my heart and I know the funds will be put to good use. I would like to thank all the volunteers from the charities who assisted with the fundraising events and collections. Thanks also to Graham for their kind support as main sponsor of the golf day and also to the many local businesses who showed their support through sponsorship, donations, and help in kind, particularly at the Golf Day. ”

A fantastic total of almost £10,000 was raised through a variety of events throughout the year. In December the Mayor held collections in Ballyclare, Glengormley and the Abbeycentre.
