’Where is your Child Tonight’ campaign hits the Borough
– May/June 2008
Members of the Newtownabbey Community Safety Partnership recently launched a high drive awareness campaign which will run across the Borough entitled ’Where is your child tonight’? The CSP is funding the campaign which kicked off on 5 May and will appear on the rears 22 buses travelling around the Newtownabbey area for 6 weeks.
This campaign has been a huge success in other areas in Northern Ireland, including Banbridge and Craigavon. With the run up to summer holidays the key message to parents is how much do the actually know about where their children are, what they’re getting up to and the potential consequences.
The overall objectives of the project are as follows:
- Increase parental responsibility
- Reduce Anti-social behaviour
- Reduce alcohol and drugs misuse amongst young people
- Reduce fear of crime in the wider community
This particular phase of the campaign will tackle underage drinking. It is envisaged that other issues such as drug abuse and criminal damage will be tackled later in the year. For further information contact Elaine Manson on Tel: 028 9034 0070.
Schools Project
This project is delivered by Common Purpose, an independent educational organisation offering leadership programmes to people of all ages and backgrounds. This programme is called Your Turn and is targeted at 13-14 year olds. Your Turn is delivered as a 3 day programme, each programme can accommodate approximately 30 young people, invited to participate from all seven post primary schools in the Borough.
Newtownabbey Community Safety Partnership has committed to funding 4 such programmes per academic year over the next 3 years. The programme concentrates on power, influence and change and on how young people can make a difference.
Participants are actively engaged throughout the 3 day programme and are given the opportunity to share opinions, ask questions and discuss ideas. Your Turn aims to:
- Enable young people to make more informed life choices.
- Break down barriers and create an understanding of other opinions.
- Increase the % of young people involved in local and city life.
- Raise aspirations and expectations of year 10 pupils in Newtownabbey Borough with regard to their future and that of their community and school.
