Bee Safe in Newtownabbey and Beyond
Through funding received from the Community Safety Unit, Newtownabbey Borough Council currently employs a Regional Project Officer to develop the Bee Safe initiative throughout Northern Ireland. Bee Safe is a proactive, multi-agency community safety initiative specifically aimed at the primary seven age group. Through interactive learning experiences, which involves role-play and real life experiences, pupils are taught how to keep themselves safe.
Within Newtownabbey the annual Bee Safe event is organised by the Youth Diversion Officers from the local Police District command Unit. However, children also receive safety advice from Newtownabbey Borough council's Environmental Health Department, the Fire Service, DoE Road Safety Officers, Northern Ireland Electricity, and Translink. Last year over eight-hundred pupils from twenty-five primary schools in the Newtownabbey area benefited from attending the Bee Safe event.
