Rowan Monument

Rowan Monument

A monument to John Rowan, the 19th century engineer who died in 1858.

Rowan established a well-known foundry on the site, later incorporated in the premises of Doagh spinning mill just outside the village.

Along with various iron implements, field gates and ornate entrances, Rowan designed and built a steam coach and on 1st January 1836 drove it through Belfast where he had set up his agricultural machinery and boilermaking business in York Street.

He is credited with inventing the 'piston ring' which greatly increased the efficiency of engines.

Located on the Main Street, Doagh.
