Mayor’s Charities
The event is held in aid of the Mayor’s Charities:
- The Haemophilia Society
The Haemophilia Society was established in 1950 and is the national charity in the UK of and for people with haemophilia, von Willebrand’s and related bleeding disorders. It has over 4,000 members and supporters with a network of sixteen local groups throughout the UK and Northern Ireland and also provides services for people with haemophilia affected by HIV and Hepatitis C.
- Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice
NI Children’s Hospice cares for life-limited children and their families across Northern Ireland by providing them with a respite service, support service and end of life care. Children from birth to 18 years of age are eligible for care and like all hospice services, there is no charge for families. The children’s hospice helps by providing friendship, care and support to the whole family, throughout the child’s illness and after the child has died. The children’s hospice is situated in Newtownabbey overlooking Belfast Lough and provides a home from home environment in what is called ’Horizon House’.
- Thornfield House School
Thornfield House Schoolis a purpose built school which caters for 90 pupils aged from 4-16 years of age. The school is a province-wide resource and there are usually pupils from all five Education and Library Boards in attendance. The school also provides an outreach facility to support children with speech and language disorders who are currently in mainstream schools. Although pupils at Thornfield House follow the NI Curriculum, emphasis is placed on visual and tactile teaching methods and augmentative communication systems are used such as Paget Gorman Signed Speech and Cued Speech.
