Carbon Monoxide:
On Monday 1st Nov 2010 a new campaign was launched by HSENI to raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The ‘Watch Out. Carbon Monoxide Kills’ campaign advises people with fossil fuel burning boilers and appliances to have them properly installed and serviced on an annual basis, to ensure that carbon monoxide is not produced.
The campaign is being supported by the families of Neil McFerran and Aaron Davidson, who tragically died earlier this year as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.
There will be TV and radio advertising, billboards, online mail shots and press advertisements.
HSENI has produced a range of leaflets and posters to support the main campaign messages. The range of resources available can be viewed at the HSENI carbon monoxide campaign website http://watchout.hseni.gov.uk/resources.htm
Leaflets and information will also be available from the Environment Services Department Newtownabbey Borough Council. Tel 90340161 or email envhealth@newtownabbey.gov.uk

Council Re-Issues Urgent Gas Cooker Alert
Certain models of the following gas cookers require URGENT modification:
- NEW WORLD
- BELLING
- FLAVEL
- LEISURE
- BEKO
Newtownabbey Borough Council again put out a call to locate gas cookers which in certain circumstances can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Despite a major media campaign last year a number of gas cookers have yet to be located.
For some specified makes and models of gas cooker, operating the grill with the grill door closed can cause potentially fatal levels of carbon monoxide to be produced.
Twenty-one cooker models (listed below) are affected but despite earlier warnings about the dangers and extensive efforts by the manufacturers to contact customers who have bought the cookers, relatively few have been located to date.
Karen Allen, Principal Environmental Health Officer, said, “There have been six deaths to date in the UK and Ireland. It is very important for people that have purchased these cookers to get in touch with the manufacturer.
Customers can arrange for a free safety inspection and modification by calling the following numbers:
For Beko, Flavel and Leisure cookers, freephone 0800 294 3129
(9am – 8pm Monday – Friday, 10am - 4pm Saturday – Sunday)
For New World and Belling cookers, freephone 0800 110 5728
(9am – 5pm Monday – Friday)
“We are again urgently calling on consumers to check their cookers today. We are also urging people staying in holiday homes or mobile homes to check the cookers. Landlords or letting agents, who may be renting their accommodation out to students also need to check the cookers in their premises as many of the cookers involved were entry level models, and may have been purchased by landlords for rented accommodation. This warning must also be brought to the attention of elderly relatives and neighbours and, ideally, do the check on their behalf.”
In light of this information Newtownabbey Borough Council is urging all consumers with gas cookers, including landlords and letting agents to:
- Check if their cooker is one of the makes and models affected (list below).
- If so, contact the relevant manufacturer helpline numbers listed below and arrange for a FREE modification.
- Do not under any circumstances operate the grill with the grill door closed – it must always be in the open position.
