Revised Equality Scheme

Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 (the Act) requires public authorities, in carrying out their functions relating to Northern Ireland, to have due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity and regard to the desirability of promoting good relations across a range of categories outlined in the Act.
Public Authorities are also required to produce an Equality Scheme which explains how they intend to fulfil these duties. Our first scheme was produced in 2001. A new scheme based on updated guidance issued by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland was approved by the Commission on 28 March 2012.
An action plan detailing measures which the Council proposes to take over the next four years to further promote equality of opportunity and good relations has also been developed. This plan was drawn up following an in-depth “audit of inequalities” which was carried out across all areas of the Council’s business.
The approved revised equality scheme and action plan can be accessed below. Paper copies and accessible formats such as Braille, audio formats and large print will be provided on request. Copies may also be provided in minority languages to meet the needs of those who are not fluent in English. Please contact:
