Antrim and Newtownabbey District Council – Draft Disability Action Plan
Under Section 49a of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (as amended by the Disability Discrimination (Northern Ireland) Order 2006), public authorities when carrying out their functions must have due regard to the need to:
- promote positive attitudes towards disabled people; and
- encourage participation by disabled people in public life.
The two duties are collectively referred to as ‘the disability duties’. The disability duties came into effect on 1 January 2007.
The Equality Commission requires that a Disability Action Plan (DAP) for Antrim and Newtownabbey District Council should be submitted within six months of the establishment of the Council. In order to meet this deadline a draft Disability Action Plan has been prepared which sets out the Council’s commitment to the promotion of equality of opportunity for disabled people. Action measures, performance indicators and targets will be identified once the new Council arrangements are in place.
The draft action plan may be accessed below and paper copies will be made available on request. We would welcome your comments on the document.
We would like to assist you to make comments on our draft DAP and are willing to facilitate meetings on request and to arrange these meetings at venues and times to accommodate the needs of those participating. We will positively respond to requests for further detail or clarification. Information will be made available on request in accessible formats such as Braille, audio formats and large print. Information will also be provided in minority languages to meet the needs of those who are not fluent in English. Should you require any further assistance do not hesitate to contact me:
